Mint and Pink Floral Shared Girl Bedroom | Beautiful & Functional
I’m so excited to finally get to reveal the final phase of our shared girl bedroom with you! It’s the perfect balance of function and beauty.
It’s been a long time coming.
We worked so hard to get it done before Summer arrived, but unfortunately, we didn’t meet that deadline.
Summer arrived and it was time to start working outside, so all the indoor projects took a backseat.
But, now that the garden is winding down and we are almost ready to start cleaning up the yard for winter, we decided it was a perfect time to pick up where we left off.
Shared Girl Bedroom: Window Coverings
We decided to go with blinds instead of curtains.
I keep going back and forth, but the truth is, my sweet precious girls play HARD!
Sure, I’ve caught them playing library, kitchen, and dress-up.
But I’ve also caught them chasing each other around the house, straight up tackling each other, and dragging each other down the hallway all in the name of “fun”.
They get it honest.
In the winter, one of our favorite activities is wrestling the Daddy monster!
I suppose it’s a form of affection for our little family haha!
So, if I hang a curtain here it’s only a matter of time before it will be ripped out of a wallpapered wall.
To me, it isn’t worth all the work that would go into covering the holes in the wallpaper.
Someday…maybe someday haha!
Shared Girl Bedroom: Closet
After living with it for 6 months now we have made a decision.
We will not be putting the closet doors back on the closet.
In so many ways I think it makes their room feel and look cluttered.
But for the girls, the way their room looks is less important than the way it functions, and for them, it has been so nice to not have doors on the closet.
We will keep the doors in the back storage room in the basement for now, because someday we might change our minds.
Isn’t that the beautiful thing about projects like this?
You can choose to go in one direction and at any moment you can change your mind and go in another direction.
Shared Girl Bedroom: Storage
This was the biggest project in our shared girl room makeover.
Now that it’s finished all I can say is that it was worth it!
The girls were so excited about the built-in bookcase and toy box as we were working on it, and when it was finished they were elated!
That toy box is their favorite!
They play hide-n-seek and push your sister into the pile of stuffed animals with it haha!
Who knew that it would be so much fun to fall into a pile of stuffed animals?
Their imagination has this simple toy box exploding with possibility!
This was the design decision I was most nervous about.
In our house I come up with a plan, I tell my husband the plan, and he helps me bring it to life.
So if this project was a flop, it would fall back on me and my terrible idea.
BUT YOU GUYS!!!
Even though I was scared, did it anyway!!
And guess what?!
It worked out beyond my expectations!
Were there “failures” concerning this built-in bookcase?
Yup!
Sure were.
But guess what…we learned from them!
Now when I ask my husband if we can build built-in bookcases in the basement we’ll do better!
That was something I learned from my first milk paint experience and it has been one of the best lessons.
My Favorite Parts of the Shared Girl Bedroom
Okay, so now that the room is finished I have to tell you my favorite parts.
The last one actually was a big surprise to me.
The Desk
This is a no-brainer!
You’ll win a spot among “my favorites” if you’re an heirloom piece with stories haha!
I shared more about this desk and where it’s from in my first update about the girls’ room.
But I still love seeing them creating memories at this desk the same way I did when I was their age.
“She Spoke” Wall Decor
This is a new piece for the girls’ shared room.
I was actually shopping for fall decor at my friends’ shop.
As I was taking a second lap around, I happened to see this sign.
I instantly grabbed it and brought it home.
When I see my girls, I see girls who are going to change the world.
They are kind, compassionate, brave, strong-willed, and they love Jesus.
Don’t get me wrong.
I don’t look at my girls and think they are going to cure cancer or solve world hunger.
Although, I truly believe if they wanted to do either of those things they could.
What I mean is this:
Not 2 days after we put this up in the girls’ room my husband was talking with my oldest about those who have much less than we do.
They were specifically talking about food.
By the end of their conversation, my 5-year-old came walking into the kitchen where I was and she said.
“Mom, can we go buy food and take it to the food pantry.”
She spoke, and her voice changed the world.
I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.
J.R.R Tolkien
It is small, but those small moments add up and change the world around it.
Mirror
I loved this mirror from the beginning.
But I didn’t love the placement.
From a design perspective, it feels funny this low to the floor.
But as a mother, I made this decision because my girls are still small and they couldn’t see themselves if I put it on the wall at a typical height for an adult.
I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve stood quietly in this doorway and watched my girls pick out their outfits for the day.
Then turn, look at themselves in the mirror, do a little dance with the biggest smile on their face, and then turn to run and show me what they chose for the day.
When they look in the mirror they walk away smiling!
Why is it that when I walk away from my mirror I feel defeated and not enough?
Too many blemishes. Not enough volume from my hair. Teeth that aren’t straight. Eyelashes that are too thin.
I could go on guys.
Talking about all the terrible parts of myself is far too easy.
But somehow seeing my girls, unjaded by society and its impossible standards, encourages me to see myself the way God see’s me too.
Wonderfully made.
Well, that is it!
I’m sure we will make little adjustments here and there along the way.
But for now, we are calling this room makeover finished!
