The Joy In Our Simple Fall Front Porch | Mums & Cabbage

I don’t think I can express to you the joy I felt when I decorated our simple Fall front porch with purple mums and cabbage this year.

That sounds absurd, doesn’t it?

How in the world can decorating a small front porch for Fall bring someone that much joy?

I suppose if I tell you the story then maybe it would make more sense.

Our Summer Front Porch

If you remember my front porch post from the Summer then you remember what my goal was for the front porch.

I planned on taking some time for myself on this small front porch.

After a day full of being a housekeeper, nanny, chef, gardener, and referee I just need a few minutes to relax.

But the very best thing in the whole world started happening.

I’d be wandering around my house looking for my husband and eventually I’d find him.

Sitting in this rocking chair just soaking in the sunset.

My heart was so full every time I’d find him there.

Before I accepted the challenge of decorating the front porch we NEVER used it.

It was just a concrete slab that you stepped on to get inside our house.

But after I showed it a little love it has become a place of rest and peace after a long day.

Simple Fall Front Porch Transition

So, when it came time to transition our small front porch for Fall I was literally singing a song.

As I cleared everything off the porch to give it a good sweeping I was dreaming.

I saw my husband coming home from work, doing some housework, playing with the kids, and getting them ready for bed. Then sneaking off to the front porch to close his eyes and rest.

It’s crazy!

I had every intention of that being ME!

I was the one who was going to use this porch for decompressing as the day came to a close.

But somehow my husband is the one who actually started doing it, and I couldn’t be more full of joy over that fact.

Simple Fall Front Porch : The Details

Mums & Cabbage

I swapped the green fern with colorful mums and cabbage for this simple fall front porch.

You all know how much I love neutrals, but I don’t want to ever give the impression that I don’t love color!

Our world is colorful and I can’t get enough of it!

I love the simplicity of the fern, but Fall is exploding with color and I wanted to replicate that on the front porch.

Honestly, any color of mum would be beautiful, but I wanted to play off the purple center of the cabbage so I got “purple” mums.

I put the cabbage and the mums inside a couple of cute round baskets we have.

(I used one of these in our apple-themed tablescape recently. These little baskets are so versatile!)

I actually love the way they are different colors.

I think they play off each other so well!

Rocking Chair

Then I grabbed one of my fall blanket scarves and dropped it over the chair because in Ohio you’ll need a blanket for sure.

Then I added a pillow.

So simple!

Something about the pillow and the blanket invites me to sit down.

This is my favorite place to sit while I wait for the bus to drop off my girl after school.

Wreath

The last thing I did for our small Fall front porch was to add a wreath.

I wanted to add a little height to the front porch and decided a cute wreath would be a fun way to add that pop of color at that height.

Do you notice that it is familiar to the neutral wreath I made earlier?

All I did was remove the neutral flowers and add some purple blooms and boom!

The Last Thing I Learned About Decorating Our Small Front Porch for Fall

The other thing I learned about our little front porch is that it is the perfect size for two people to dance.

While I was finishing taking pictures for this post my oldest can wandering out to check out what I was doing.

Then a song came on (I play music while I take all these pictures I love to share with you) and she looked up at me and asked “Mom, can we dance?”

It’s a song we’ve danced to before.

So in the middle of the photoshoot, I scooped her up and we started spinning in circles on this front porch all decorated for Fall.

At that moment I saw the big magic in the mundane of our small front porch.

I can easily see it in the kitchen when we bake or cook, or in a bedroom while we read our devotions.

But I never imaged our small front porch would be a place where small moments turned into dear memories.

Resting alone, or dancing with one of my favorite people…this front porch has exceeded all my expectations for it.

Do you have a space in your home that you’ve neglected because you didn’t think it could ever amount to anything?

I challenge you to show that space some love and see what memories you can make as a result.
