5 Simple & Thrifty Summer Decoration Ideas | Summer Home Tour

I’m so excited to share Summer decoration ideas with you! During Summer, I want the house to look nice, but with minimal time and money.

Summer Decoration ideas

I’ve got outdoor activities on my mind!

When Summer comes I can think of nothing more than going outside to the garden, playing on the playset with the girls, going on bike rides, and bonfires.

Consequently, this means I’m spending less time inside.

I like it that way!

The house stays cleaner when we’re outside more, am I right?! haha!

Before I share my Summer decoration ideas with you I want to say a big Thank you to Kelly with The Tattered Pew for organizing this blog hop.

If you’re here from Simply 2 Moms thanks for coming!

Now, let’s get started with these Summer decoration ideas so we can head back outside and enjoy the wonderful Summer weather!

How do I spruce up my house in the Summer?

Baskets

I might have a small obsession. I should probably share a post with all the baskets I have.

A vintage basket of greenery

Some I’ve bought, some have been gifted, and some have been rescued from the family farm.

A basket full of fresh rhubarb

But the truth is, in the Summer, I don’t think you can have too many baskets.

Baskets for the flowers we cut and bring inside, for produce and herbs from the garden, eggs from the chickens, and for transporting all these goodies on Fathers Day!

Foraged Flowers/Greenery

The Summer is full of fresh greenery and flowers. Something that can feel so limited.

Fresh cut greenery in the Dining Room

I’m not sure why, but I always feel like my time with fresh and wild-growing flowers always feels so short. So I want to submerge myself in them. (Part of the reason we made this pressed flower artwork.)

Plus, added bonus!!! They cost nothing!!

I know, I know!

It takes time.

But what if you spent it wandering around the yard with your husband’s hand in yours? Or with your little girls running wild helping you select flowers to cut and bring in? Or maybe you live near a dear friend who would love nothing more than picking flowers with you?

I don’t always pick my flowers in one of these scenarios, but I do try.

As a stay-at-home mom, sometimes what I need most is solitude.

What better way to spend alone time than wandering.

I shared a few tips for floral arrangements for beginners if you feel like you don’t even know where to start. It doesn’t have to be complicated.

At its foundation, it’s actually quite simple.

Fresh Produce/Baked Goods

My next go to for decorating in the Summer is fresh baked good and produce.

Fresh peaches in a vintage bowl

We’re going to the grocery store anyway, and buying produce that’s in season tends to be cheaper than fruit out of season!

I bought some peaches because the girls have been begging me for them since the snow melted haha! Even though it is slightly early for peach season here in Ohio, they tasted wonderful!

So grab some fruit that’s in season and if you’re feeling up for it grab the other ingredients required to make a fresh pie or loaf of bread for your family.

Strawberry Rhubarb pie

This is my first strawberry rhubarb pie! It turned out pretty good if you ask me and my family haha!

I’ll bake some more for Fathers Day this weekend, because the garden is exploding with strawberries and rhubarb, and because it’s a favorite Summer pie around here.

Up next will be lemon blueberry zucchini bread! Our blueberry bushes are small, but they are mighty.

As long as we can keep the birds away from those berries we should easily have enough for one loaf!

Speaking of zucchini, do you have it growing out of your ears in the Summer? Try this delicious pizza to help use up some of the zucchini.

Farmhouse Kitchen Decorations

In the mean time I’ll settle for these delicious muffins from Nickel & Bean.

Remember when I shared their cinnamon rolls for Mothers Day? All their baked goods are so tasty!

Everyday Items

If you’ve been following along for a little while, you know I love to use my everyday items to decorate my house.

copper pots and pans on a pot rack

My pots and pans on my DIY pot rack, the dishes on the DIY farmhouse open shelves, books I’m reading or have read, a jean jacket, etc.

I feel like the everyday items help with a few things.

  1. They help the space feel lived in. I don’t know about you, but my house is lived in for sure and I LOVE it!
  2. It makes it easier to decorate. You don’t have to run all around town looking for all the things in all the stores for all the places in your home.
  3. Finally, it helps cut down on how much money you are using to decorate. We have pots and pans, we might as well turn them into a focal point?!

Less is More

My last tip for Summer decorations that will help you get back to living your best life is to decorate with less.

Does this mean that sometimes you’ll decorate a space and it might actually feel like its empty and needs more?

Sure!

But sometimes when you do less you actually discover you didn’t need all that stuff to begin with.

Main Goal for Summer Decoration Ideas

Lately I’ve been struck with this idea that I’m running out of time.

My oldest is starting kindergarten this Fall and my youngest will start preschool.

Time is what we want most, but what you used worst.

I want my home to be a beautiful place of rest and rejuvenation for my family. But not at the expense of my time with them.

Maybe once they’re all in school I’ll start doing all kinds of things and decorating to the nines.

But for now, for this precious, messy, chaotic season I’m living, I want to be fully present and available.

Available to help with reading and math, or when we are having issues with friends at school.

I want to be available when they find a really awesome-looking bug in the garden, or when they want to just sit and snuggle with me.

Available for learning to ride a bike without training wheels, and how to pump on the swing.

These precious moments won’t last forever.

So, if you’re feeling like me and realizing that time is fleeting then these are the 5 main decorating ideas I used to create a beautiful home in less time.

The Jones’s have no idea we’re trying to keep up, but our families notice when we are consumed with the idea of a beautiful home over beautiful relationships.
