Before we get into my simple kitchen Fall decor ideas, I want to say thank you to my friend Kelly with The Tattered Pew for hosting this blog hop.

It’s one of my favorites!

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Okay, let’s get into my cottage style decor in the kitchen for this year.

If you’d like you can watch me decorate my kitchen for Fall on YouTube.

My Favorite Thrifty Tips for Fall Decor

Simple Kitchen Fall Decor: Everyday Items

The first thing I do when I get ready to add budget-friendly cottage style Fall decor to my kitchen is empty the counters and shelves.

Flipping decor is a great time to give everything a good cleaning.

Then when I start to put things back I only put back the essentials.

I make sure that I have all of our everyday items on the shelves and countertops.

Honestly, I have some decor that is strictly decor.

But most of the items that I use for decor in our kitchen are things we use regularly.

**There isn’t a better tip for keeping costs down when decorating than that**

A few of the things I like to use for simple elegant fall decor are my crock bowls.

I use these for my sourdough bread.

My great-grandma’s measuring cups.

I use these for scoops for oatmeal and flour when baking.

My cutting/bread boards that I use for cutting bread and serving finger foods.

I think everyday items are becoming more accepted as home decor, especially if you’re going for a simple country kitchen design.

When we added our DIY wooden peg rail, I touched on this a bit.

I know that a specific decor style or DIY project isn’t going to suddenly solve the battle between keeping up and intentionally slowing down.

But I do think that when we display the things that remind us of the life we want to live, it motivates us.

It’s a silent reminder to live on purpose when the temptation to aimlessly keep up is strong

Simple Kitchen Fall Decor: Calm Earthy Colors

Now that I have everything back on the shelves and countertops that we regularly use I decide what color scheme I want to use for Fall.

This is such a small thing but has such a HUGE impact.

By switching out the color of tea towels I can completely change the feeling the kitchen evokes.

This year I decided I wanted my color scheme to be green, yellow, and orange.

Ohio in late September has a blanket of these colors covering it.

Which is how I landed on this color scheme.

Last year I let my childhood home dictate my color scheme and ended up decorating our kitchen and living room in plum, and copper.

(If you love copper like me it’s a must for all the color schemes and I think it fits no matter your style or scheme lol)

Simple Kitchen Fall Decor: Dried Herbs

After I have everything back in the kitchen that I know we need I start thinking about the items I can add to create a cozy Fall feeling.

This is something that I have been doing all Summer long for culinary purposes, but it works for Fall decor too!

The girls and I finished reading “The Little House In The Big Woods” and in the Fall Ma would have the entire home full of dried/drying herbs as she prepared for Winter.

So I decided it was the perfect addition to our Fall decor.

PS Again, this is FREE decor!!

Not to mention it actually helps you save money on spices and herbs!

I have used some of the peppermint leaves I dried already for tea and it was some of the best peppermint tea.

If you’re interested in creating a container herb garden I did one this Spring and will be doing it again for years!

Simple Kitchen Fall Decor: Mums & Pumpkins

This is where I start to get a little more into decor than function.

I have baked and pureed pumpkins in the past, but the mums are just because they are pretty haha!

I love adding florals to my decor and usually I go for a walk and forge for my stems.

But when Fall rolls around I love mums.

If I told you the only flower I used to decorate the reception at my wedding would you believe me?

Yup.

Just mums.

While I was decorating our kitchen this year I was actually reminded very much of my wedding day.

We had a modest and simple Fall country wedding.

A few vintage crocks, mums, sticks with paper leaves, apple cider, and donuts are some of the main things I remember from that day.

It feels so appropriate to remember the best day of my life when I walk into this kitchen, especially in light of all the hard going on over here these days.

(If you don’t know we just brought home our adopted daughter earlier this Summer and we’re still working through getting to know each other, bonding, and communicating. It’s beautiful to see all that God is healing in her and in me, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.)

Simple Kitchen Fall Decor: Vintage Items

I touched on this already, but I love decorating with vintage items.

Some of the items I use regularly and some are just for decor.

But all are beautiful!

  • Baskets
  • Dough Bowls
  • Bread boards
  • Rolling Pins
  • My vintage scissors
  • Books

Simple Kitchen Fall Decor: Artwork

There are so many different forms of artwork that you could use.

But for my cottage style decor in the kitchen I am usually drawn to landscapes.

Honestly when I think about the artwork in my living room this year for Fall, and the entryway everything is a landscape.

That doesn’t mean you have to use landscapes, but I’m drawn to them.

They speak to me.

Use whatever artwork speaks to you.

*Pro Tip*

Art is art no matter the season.

You can use seasonal artwork, or you can use the same thing all year long.

It’s all about the feelings and emotions it provokes in you.

Remember Less Can Be More

At the end of the day, my best tip for decorating for Fall is to remember less is more.

I’m not going to pretend like I’m the most minimalist person.

But I have found so much peace in having less.

It’s a journey and a balance.

Between the feeling you want your home to have and the function you need it to provide.

Don’t be afraid to give your home space to “rest” when you decorate this year.

It’s okay to have an empty wall or corner.

It doesn’t mean you still have decorating to do.

It’s an intentional space to give your mind rest as you live your life in your home.

I’ll be sharing our living room fall decor soon and I have really minimized the amount of “stuff” in our living room.
