Simple Winter Decor to Create Peace in Your Home

January is one of the few months during the year that seems calm. The weather feels peaceful and even our schedules slow down. I love it so much that I decided to decorate our dining room with peace as the main goal.

Winter Decor

Thank you Cecilia for putting this winter decor blog hop together! I know how much work it is and truly appreciate you! If you stopping over from Amber with Follow the Yellow Brick Home, thanks so much for continuing the journey! For those who may not know, my name is Aliya. I’m a nurse turned mostly stay-at-home mom who loves DIY projects, decorating, and gardening. I believe that by opening our doors to those around us we will see hearts open around us too.

***Before we go any further let me say this: I know you’re busy. I know you have so much going on in your life. So go ahead and scroll through here looking at the winter decor images for inspiration and save them for later by Pinning them. But when you get to the “Story Behind the ABC Scripture Cards” slow down. The heart of this post is in that section.***

To achieve peaceful winter decor I tried to focus on colors and objects that provoke or symbolize peace and tranquility. But I also wanted to make sure that I did this with ‘less’. I think sometimes when we leave “space” in our home decor it feels calmer. I understand that peace is a feeling, but I also think it’s a choice, and for this season I decided to choose peace for our home.

Elements to Incorporate Peace into Winter Decor

Peaceful Colors

When I researched colors and the way they make people feel I learned blue often causes us to feel calm and tranquil. I’d have to say this is true for me. Imagine standing on a sandy beach with nothing but beautiful blue waters as far as the eye can see. Or imagine standing in the middle of a field of lavender with nothing around you but blue skies above green & purple fields. Most people would say these visuals make them feel calm and peaceful.

So I added blue to the decor, since this is what I wanted for our home. I began taking down all the pops of red of Christmas and replacing them with touches of blue ribbons.

Cozy Candles

The next element that I incorporated into my winter decor was candles. I love candles all year long because of the ambiance they create. They are calm and cozy by themselves. Since I really wanted to increase these feelings I decided to increase the candles.

I place them all over the table, in the form of candlesticks and in votives. But I didn’t stop there. I also added a bundle of candles to the hot cocoa bar. I wrapped a handful with a blue ribbon. See what I did there?! haha!

I wanted to add a couple of hand-dipped candles to the wall rack. I think they would look dreamy draped over one of the hooks. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any. (But go figure now that I’m posting this one of the stores that was out of stock is now IN STOCK haha!)

Hopeful Greenery

I see peace and calm when I look out my window in the winter. But I also see a little bit of hope sprinkled around out there. There is hope for the Spring & Summer that are coming. Hope for new growth that is being prepared during this time of peace.

Eucalyptus reminds me of Spring & Summer. Something about it feels light and fresh. So in all the evergreens that I used in my winter decor, I added eucalyptus. It feels like the perfect combination.

Something Special for the Dining Room Table

Low Centerpiece Décor for Conversation

If you remember my Thanksgiving Table Setting post you remember my desire for conversation. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to me. Time and time again I’ve seen that conversation and connection occur more easily over a meal. But when a gorgeous centerpiece is blocking the face of the one sitting across the table, it seems to diminish it.

I created a centerpiece that was low and allowed our family to talk easily. I used a garland of evergreens and mixed it with a garland of eucalyptus. Then I mixed candles, brass bells, and ribbon throughout the garland.

Don’t worry, the tree is no longer up. But between you and me, I just took it down this week!

Intentional Conversations: ABC Scripture Cards

One of the things 2020 has taught me is that getting distracted from what matters most is something that happens all too easily. So when I stumbled upon the idea of ABC Scripture cards I knew exactly where they needed to be. At the center of our table. As a constant and steadfast reminder to keep the main thing the main thing. We work on memorizing them based on the letter of the week for our preschooler. Doing this has helped our little family find peace in scripture, and connection with each other.

The Story Behind The ABC Scripture Cards in Our Winter Decor

It was a Monday. I pulled out my camera to take these pictures. On that particular Monday, everything you see in these images was set up the same, except the table. The bowls on the table were empty. When I was decorating this room and making sure the dining room was decorated with peaceful winter décor it felt like leaving the bowls empty was the right thing to do.

It felt like by leaving them empty I was giving God the ability to fill them. I didn’t know what God wanted to fill these empty spaces with yet, but I knew He wanted to fill them with something. So I waited.

Back to Monday. After I got the girls down for their afternoon naps/rests I discover my tripod was broken. I couldn’t get the images without a tripod. It was a cloudy day: Great for pictures when you have a tripod, but bad for pictures when you don’t. I was extremely frustrated! I had a plan and schedule!! This silly tripod was messing it all up!!

Well, the very next day I learned why God had let my tripod (which was limping along the past few months) come to its final end. He showed me what He wanted to use to fill the empty spaces. He wanted to fill these bowls/my/your empty spaces with Himself.

I know this seems so obvious, but for me, it’s truly transformed the whole room. Now, more than ever, I sense and feel a “peace that transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7) when I come into this space. He is at the heart of everything we do, so it only makes sense to put Him at the center of our home’s winter decor too.
