A Simple Cozy & Classic Christmas

Our finished basement all dressed for Christmas is my favorite way to see it. This year I decided to do a cozy & classic Christmas in this space, and so far I’m loving it more than any other way I’ve decorated it.

It’s not necessary to decorate the basement, but it’s one of my favorite places to decorate for Christmas. I feel like I can experiment and I’m never rushed to finish the décor down there. I can take my time and try new things.

Can I do this upstairs? I certainly can, and I do. But there is just something so forgiving and peaceful about this living space in the basement. Maybe it’s because it’s a place most people don’t visit. Maybe because it’s in the basement, which is full of rooms that require grace and forgiveness. We have a guest bedroom full of who knows what that has been forgotten behind the closed door, a playroom with toys overflowing in the living space, and a storage room that was organized once, or twice, or seven times before and still finds a way to get unorganized.

Our basement is a safe place for us. It’s where we spent hours upon hours when our second baby girl was a newborn. Sitting on the reclining couches with her heart beating against Justin’s chest, sleeping, while he gave me a break. The space where we would run around playing tickle monster with our firstborn and run her around in her little car walker. That basement isn’t perfect, but it is such a wonderful place to simply be. It must be those things that make this area my favorite to decorate for Christmas.

Classic Christmas Mantel

Back in early Spring, I did my first chalk paint project. The mantel! I love the way it looks now so much more than I did when it was white. I also love the new location for the mantel. I’m thinking about adding some pretty tile in the empty space to finish it up. Ekk!!! For the mantel, I mixed a couple different evergreen garlands. One cedar garlands and one standard and cheaper garlands.

For the bottom of the “fireplace”, I left it as I had it before, but I removed the candlesticks and glass bottles I had there throughout the Summer. I wanted to simplify the mantel because, during Christmas, the focal point isn’t this cute little fireplace. It’s the Christmas tree!

Classic Christmas Coffee Table

For the coffee table I placed a plate of candles and evergreen stems with red berries and pinecones. I also placed a couple books with a deer ankle on them. I found the deer antler at a flea market this summer. We bought 3-4 antlers that day, for the dogs because they love to chew on a good deer antler. This one had been put in their toy basket and forgotten about, so I decided I’d use it for decoration. Well, I’ve been fighting with our German Shephard, Luka, about it ever since.

She knew I wanted it to be left alone, but that little stinker would sneak away and very stealthy like remove it from the books and then go to town. So, while it’s in these pictures here, rest assured, when your reading this it’s probably in Luka’s mouth. I’m done fighting haha!

Classic Christmas Tree

Ever since we moved into this house, the basement Christmas tree has been a little bit different. It’s not always been drastically different, but different, nonetheless. This year it is drastically different and I’m loving it! I gave it the classic feel with the red bulbs, and cute brass vintage bells. Then I added to the natural look but adding sprigs of red berries, pinecones, and homemade salt dough ornaments from last year. The combination creates a simple cozy Christmas tree that seems to ask for you to stay awhile. This is by far my favorite basement tree.

More Like Home

This year I wanted to have a classic, red, and natural Christmas, and I am loving what happened this year. I feel like each year we live in this house I learn new ways to decorate it and make it feel more like home. I remember the first time I heard Brad Paisley’s song “I Thought I Loved You Then”, that’s how I feel about our home, especially at Christmas.

The more time we live here, the more memories we make here, the more I feel like I know how to better decorate our house for the people who live inside of it. Full of grace, love, and of course Barbie dolls haha!
