Functional Decor – How to Give Purpose to Decor
Today I thought I’d share a few of the ways I’ve combined beauty with function in case you needed some inspiration to find functional decor for your home. Having a pretty home is definitely nice, but what’s more important for us is having a home that’s functional. The function has always been far more essential for our family. That being said, I have challenged myself to find ways to combine form and function in our home. I love it looking pretty, but I also need the decor to go beyond beauty.
Vintage Metal Box for Thank You Cards
This one is important to me alone. The rest of the family doesn’t directly receive the encouragement and challenge that I do from this functional decor. For 2020 I decided to strive to live a life that is more grateful. I want to be more appreciative of the people in my life. By no means am I perfect at this, but I’m making progress. Remember my Spring Entryway post where I talked about progress towards a goal? Left foot- Right foot! To help remind me to be grateful I put a vintage tin box on my desk and filled it with “Thank You” cards.
I sit at my desk every day and sometimes more than once a day. So every time I sit down I see the tin and I’m reminded to be grateful. Even if I don’t pull out a “Thank you” card and deliver it to someone, I’m reminded. It’s been a beautiful thing for me. Sometimes I get mad at this tin because I’m really not in the mood to be grateful. But the silent challenge doesn’t ever respond to my arguments for selfish thoughts and feelings. It just sits there, silently waiting for me to relent to the pursuit of a grateful way of life.
Vintage Mailbox Hiding Dog Treats
We used to have a cute metal basket on the floor under the bench in the entryway. That was where we stored our dog treats. But it didn’t last because we discovered our youngest was literally feeding the entire bag of dog treats to the dogs! It was super cute don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t enjoy buying dog treats that often. Needless to say, when we moved the treats to a closet down the hallway the dogs were sad haha! It was incredibly inconvenient to walk down the hall every time the dogs needed a treat. So when we put the empty vintage mailbox on the wall it just made sense! It’s been a perfect place for us to store dog treats!
An added bonus to our new setup is you don’t smell dog treats right when you walk in the front door. When the dog treats were in the basket, the first thing you’d smell upon entering our home was dog treats, but not anymore!!
Sometimes the purpose of the decor is to look pretty, but sometimes, if we get creative, we can utilize our pretty decor for a purpose beyond beauty. Is this how you like to decorate your home? It’s been a fun challenge to find more than beauty in the decor for me. I hope you find that there is more to your decor too! Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week! I can’t wait for next week’s post! We’re making progress in the garden and I’m pumped! XoXo
