Wax Test

To paint over chalk paint you should remove the wax first. The way I checked, was with the fingernail test. I scratched my nail on the piece of furniture and had a build-up under my nail.

Remove Doors/Hardware

I know plenty of DIYers don’t do this step, but for me, it takes 20 minutes and makes my life during the project so much easier.

Put down plastic

The first step isn't hard, but it is a little bit messy, so we put down cardboard and plastic to help contain the mess and not ruin our carpet.

Scrub with mineral spirits

I used a scotch brite scrub pad and poured minerals spirits on it and began scrubbing the cabinet to remove the wax. It worked beautifully!

The difference this step makes is huge! The mineral spirits breaks down the wax so easily and you just wipe it away.

Wipe down with Krud Kuter then Prime

Priming isn't absolutely necessary, but I like to be super sure that the paint won't chip or scratch easily.

Paint

I used a color called Muted Sage by Behr and we all love it. Its the perfect gray-green color and it fits perfectly with our European cottage style.
