country cottage bedroom ideas for a cozy retreat

When we bought our first house, we redid everything from the floor to the roof and everything in between.

But the biggest mistake we made was waiting to finish our bedroom until we were ready to list our house and sell it.

We said when we got to our second house that we weren’t going to do that again.

So we moved in and did nothing with the master bedroom until we were ready to list it AGAIN.

This time we are not going to do that.

In our new house, there is a lot that should be done in this room.

When you step into the bedroom, you step down 2 inches.

The window trim has been buried in whatever material they used on the walls to create this bumpy texture.

There is only one working outlet.

The problem with these particular projects is that they are going to be a big undertaking and cost a lot of money.

1850 house problems haha!

So, for now, we are going to make what we have cozy and peaceful on a budget.

You can watch me start this makeover HERE

What is the best color for a cottage bedroom?

Okay, so this is something that there is no “real” answer to.

Some will say that the cottage style is calm with neutral colors.

While others will say that European cottage colors are those floral pinks, reds, yellows, and blues.

I know some interior designers would freak out to read this, but what I’ve learned about interior design is that colors can transcend all design styles.

You can have a cottage style home with warm neutrals, cool neutrals, dark bold colors, or light floral colors.

It all depends on the feelings you want your home to evoke.

For me, I want a calm and soothing home.

So I’m sticking with warmish neutral colors for my European cottage bedroom makeover.

I also feel like when I look back at period pictures of old cottages and farmhouses that I use for inspiration, bold and flashy colors were not common.

How to create a country style bedroom?

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas – Fresh Paint

The first thing we’re going to attempt to do is paint the walls and trim.

If you remember our living room makeover, then you know that we had to sand down all the trim work before we could prime and paint it.

It’s not the end of the world, but it is time-consuming.

I’m hopeful that the paint in this room is sticking better, though.

There isn’t any obvious peeling that is occurring right now.

Paint Color

I’m going to choose White Dove for the walls and a true beige for the trim for our bedroom.

Our bedroom is extremely bright until about 3p, even on cloudy days.

So I want to make sure that I select a trim color is looks more beige than grey.

The living room is on the opposite side of the house to our bedroom.

When we painted the trim Revere Pewter in there, I learned that the brightness changes the color of the Revere Pewter.

It’s more grey than I wanted.

But the Revere Pewter in the kitchen and dining room looks much more beige.

It’s all about light and how it reflects.

So, to create the same cozy feeling we have in our kitchen and dining room, I have to select a different color.

I’m excited about it, though.

The mudroom makeover has helped me feel braver about non-traditional neutral colors.

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas – Lighting

Currently, this room has a light bulb in the ceiling.

This is something I’ve seen in country cottage style rooms as I look at Pinterest.

But we are not going to keep this.

It was a temporary light solution for the early days in our new house.

We are going to go with a 100% functional ceiling fan for our bedroom.

They don’t have the beautiful English country style that I love so much, but when it’s 75°F overnight in the summer, I’m going to be grateful for a fan to help circulate air.

Sometimes, design has to take a backseat to practicality.

But if we had A/C in our house and a fan was not a necessity in our bedroom, I think I would go with something like THIS or THIS.

The other addition we are going to add to our country cottage bedroom is wall sconces.

Most of the other light fixtures that I have picked throughout the house have glass shades.

I wanted to make sure I wasn’t overemphasizing glass shades, which is why I went with these.

I do like the way this lampshade can transcend styles from country cottage to traditional to modern.

A simple fabric shade is just that: simply beautiful.

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas – Rug

The room is so small it’s hard to get a good picture of the rug in our room. But this is the rug from when it was in the old house. You can see it in the YouTube video.

I love this rug so much.

It’s the rug we had in the living room at the old house.

When we moved here, we needed another large rug for either the living room or our bedroom.

I’ll be honest, this rug has held up so nicely.

I know we are an active young family that is harder on rugs with our pets and kids, but this rug is 1 or 2 years older than the new rug I bought for the living room, and this one looks better.

The colors of this rug are nice, warm, neutral colors, so I can easily swap out bedding to go with the season, and this rug will match nicely.

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas – Bedframe

small cottage bedroom ideas for a cozy and peaceful space

I recently bought a wooden bedframe with a headboard and a footboard.

But with the furniture in our bedroom right now, the wooden headboard made the room feel heavy.

So I want to try a wrought iron headboard now.

But our bedroom is very narrow and long.

There is about 24″ of walking space between the foot of the bed and the wall.

I tried to spin the bed so it would be narrow beside the bed with much more space at the end of the bed, but that doesn’t work with a king-size bed.

The king is so wide that we both had less than 1 foot of walking space getting in and out of bed.

This didn’t bother me spatially, except that meant no nightstands, and we both use them every night.

So now we are going back and forth between downsizing to a queen and buying a queen headboard, because, go figure, it’s also time to think about buying a new mattress.

Do you guys have any suggestions on mattresses?

Total honesty here: This mattress is only 3 years old, but even with me spinning it 4 times a year, we are sleeping in troughs, and it makes for terrible conditions.

We’re considering going back to a tried and true spring mattress because we think it may be the pillow top that is the problem.

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas – Vintage Furniture

All of the furniture in our cottage style bedroom is vintage, and I love it all.

Both of the nightstands came from my side of the family.

Then the tall dresser with glass doors was a purchase from a vintage shop locally.

We broke this piece as we brought it home, and I was so upset about it.

But in this post, I talk about how we repaired it, and it looks great now.

You’d never know, until you knew haha!

Then the small dresser on my side came from a garage sale of dear friends of ours.

Their parents were moving into a community living place in town and had to downsize.

This dresser was broken and needed a little TLC.

But we fixed it and it looks beautiful now!

The glass knobs are my favorite detail.

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas – Artwork

We’ve been living in this room with no artwork on the walls.

For someone who loves artwork as much as me that was the first thing I wanted to do.

The large picture above our bed I bought at a garage sale a few years ago.

Then I moved my cows on the pasture piece that I had in the living room this winter until I did my Spring living room refresh.

The small frame on top is just a creamy/beige piece of paper I had in the office.

I didn’t have anything else to put in it, so that’s what I did.

For a temporary fix, I actually like it.

The large frame above the bed is beautiful.

But the picture is so not great anymore.

I looked at getting a print to replace it, but I haven’t figured out the details yet.

But before this makeover is finished, I plan on swapping out this picture with something else.

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas – Simple Curtains

I’ve gone back and forth between enhancing the cottage vibe with lace curtains, or at the very least, curtains with lace on them.

But these are curtains I had from IKEA, so I put them up.

After I figure out how much a new mattress and bedframe are going to cost us then I may swap these curtains.

But if the mattress and bedframe don’t leave enough room in the budget, these curtains will work beautifully.

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas – Bedding

After we decide what size mattress we are going to go with, I’m going to get a quilt for our bedroom.

We currently have a duvet that is great for a 1850 farmhouse in the winter.

But when summer comes, it is much to heavy.

When we first got married, I bought a quilt for our summer bedding and loved it.

Now, 12 years later, it’s starting to fray, and the batting around the edge is coming off.

In my searching, it seems like Etsy is going to have the best options for the country cottage style that I like.

Amazon has a few that look pretty, but there is something that a handmade quilt has that a store-bought quilt doesn’t.

I’m also thinking maybe a floral print for the quilt.

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas – Plank Door & Hardware

what we did in the living room

We did this project when we did the living room makeover and decided we wanted to carry it throughout the rest of the house as we redo different spaces.

Ultimately, we want to replace all the doors with solid wood doors, but that is not in the budget this year.

This DIY was so cheap and added so much character to the living room.

I know that it will do the same thing when we do it to our bedroom.

I think I’m going to go with the same hardware I used in the living room because the glass knob will coordinate with the glass knobs on my dresser.

And it was the cheapest one that I found haha!

Country Cottage Bedroom Ideas: Keep It Simple

simple cottage style decorating ideas

The biggest thing I’m going to do is keep our English country bedroom as simple as I can.

Our bedroom can fill with clutter so easily.

Laundry starts to pile up.

School papers end up piled on our nightstands.

But I want our bedroom to feel like a retreat from the chaos of running a homestead.

When we open our bedroom door, there is always something going on.

But our bedroom can be a calm retreat to rest and pause between all the projects.

Speaking of which, in a couple of weeks, I’m going to share the plans and progress we are making with our 2025 garden!!

I’m so excited about it!!

Thanks so much for stopping by!
