I haven’t started decorating for Fall yet, but I have been looking for inspiration and wanted to share these simple DIY Fall decor ideas that add cottage style.
Since it’s still a little early for Fall decor, I thought it was a good idea to share some DIY projects for Fall decor.
This way you couple a couple weeks to gather materials and complete the projects.
This way you don’t have to stress out about getting them done “in time” for your Fall home decorating.

How can I decorate for fall with no money?
This is the best part about simple DIY Fall decor.
They are so much more thrifty than going out and buying new Fall decor.
Decorating for Fall on a budget is very doable.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to save money and still have a cozy and beautiful Fall home.
- Forge for Fall stems/florals
- DIY a wreath from forged stems/florals
- Simplify; Less can be so much more
- Buy mums and pumpkins from local farms, or grow your own pumpkins
- Buy pillow covers instead of full pillows for Fall
- DIY fabric pumpkins
- DIY sweater pumpkins
- Use dried florals from the garden
When Is the Best Time to Decorate for Fall?
This is 100% up to you.
In short, whenever you feel like it.
I used to start decorating for Fall in August.
But these days I am so busy in August that I have no choice but to wait until September.
(As a blogger this is “not good for business”, but someday WAY TO SOON my babies will be grown and out of the house. So I soak it up while I can.)
When I decorated In August I would do an early Fall decor before I jumped right into the cozy & earthy Fall decor.
7 Simple DIY Fall Decor Ideas that Add Cottage Style
Simple DIY Fall Decor – DIY Simmer Pot
At first glance you may think this is not a DIY project.
I guess the only other thing I would call it is a recipe.
But it’s such a big hitter for inspiration and setting the ambiance for the rest of the projects that i had to add it.
Simmer pots are my favorite way to infuse our home with Fall.
It’s a small thing, but has such a huge impact.
DIY Air-dry Clay Pumpkins
This is one of my favorite easy Fall DIY projects I’ve ever done.
It wasn’t complicated at all.
It was so fun working with the clay in my hands and manipulating it until it looked they way I wanted.
Maybe I should spend more time playing with the girls when they pull out playdough haha!
It was so nice making these little pumpkins.
And so much cheaper than buying the Pottery Barn pumpkins I modeled them after.
Dried Florals – Simple DIY Fall Decor
Wreath
The girls and I made this cute wreath last year from dried grasses.
It’s a wire hanger, bundles of dried grasses, and brown floral tape.
The most simple and still beautiful wreath.
I think I might see if the girls want to make another one with me this year to hang in front of one of the photos in the living room gallery wall.
Bouquet
There are a couple ways to do this.
You can just simply add them to a vase like you would if they were fresh flowers.
But another fun way is to turn them upside down and hang them as if you are drying them.
I did this with herbs from our garden all the time.
It always made the kitchen smell so good.
But you could do the same thing with flowers as well.
DIY Antiqued Picture Frame
I can’t count the number of times I’ve painted a frame to look the way I wanted it to look.
I’ve done mirrors and picture frames.
It’s so cheap to make it fit my style and again, it’s therapeutic to work with my hands.
The girls are even able to help me which always makes projects more enjoyable.
Not that things are “peaceful” when you do them with littles, but I know my time with them at these young ages is short.
So I want to make as many memories, and involve them as much as I can.
I think part of my job as a homemaker is to model it, and teach them so they can go and do the same thing for their families someday.
(Hopefully not very far away though.)
DIY Fabric Pumpkins with Real Stems
I love these little pumpkins so much!
I think for my Fall decor this year I may go through my fabric scrapes and make s couple of new ones in different colors.
They were really easy to make and turned out so cute.
Honestly, I think I made these while we watched football or something like that.
DIY Seasonal Artwork – Simple DIY Fall Decor
After I finished decorating our living room, an idea hit me for decorating with simple DIY fall decor in here this year.
I decided to add a couple pictures to the gallery wall that I created.
For the first picture I took a picture frame that I had some pressed florals in already and added a black background.
By giving the frame a black background instead of the white background it had been I was able to add a subtle Fall feeling.
The darker color added a coziness.
The second picture was a picture of some dried/pressed leaves that I found in the yard.
Something as simple as leaves can be a great way to turn artwork into seasonal decor.
DIY Ribbon
I keep talking about all these easy Fall DIY projects that I love, but this one may actually be my favorite.
I love to decorate with ribbon.
But buying ribbon is too expensive.
One way I was at the fabric store buying ribbon and the lady at the check out said “Hey. Have you ever ripped ribbon stripes from muslin fabric?”
I bought some that day and then I died it with coffee grounds for Fall, and then I dyed some more a deep red color for Christmas.
I love the natural and casual way muslin fabric strips look with frayed edges.
And you don’t have to worry about then wrinkling too much while they are in storage, because it just adds to the casual look.
If you haven’t tried this you have to try it this year!
I’m thinking about making a dark brown dye for some of the left over fabric I have.
That dark brown would be beautiful for Fall (and Christmas!)
