To paint over chalk paint you should remove the wax first. The way I checked, was with the fingernail test. I scratched my nail on the piece of furniture and had a build-up under my nail.
I know plenty of DIYers don’t do this step, but for me, it takes 20 minutes and makes my life during the project so much easier.
The first step isn't hard, but it is a little bit messy, so we put down cardboard and plastic to help contain the mess and not ruin our carpet.
I used a scotch brite scrub pad and poured minerals spirits on it and began scrubbing the cabinet to remove the wax. It worked beautifully!
Priming isn't absolutely necessary, but I like to be super sure that the paint won't chip or scratch easily.
I used a color called Muted Sage by Behr and we all love it. Its the perfect gray-green color and it fits perfectly with our European cottage style.
