Easy Ways to Transition Winter to Spring Decor | Living Room
Transitioning from winter to spring decor doesn’t have to be hard, so I decided to share some of the simple and cozy ways I add Spring decor to the living room.

I’m so ready for Spring now that it is April.
March feels like I’m holding on to what’s left of winters calm and peaceful months of winter.
But when April hits, I am ready for Spring to start.
Living in Ohio, that means I’ll still be fighting cooler days.
But generally, all of April is a gentle slide toward warmer days.

How to transition from winter to spring decor?
Transitioning from winter decor to a cozy spring decor doesn’t have to be hard.
It should be a fun and exciting process.
It almost feels like waking my house up from its rest during winter.
I start by removing the items that are darker and heavier.

Taking the items that feel more like Fall and Winter out of the space gives your brain space to see what you need to add that is lighter and brighter.
It also gives you a visual to see if you even need to add anything back anyway.
One of the easiest and more budget-friendly ways to decorate for Spring is to have less stuff.
The more simple the space, the less like winter it feels.

Winter almost feels like a warm embrace, whereas Spring feels a lot like letting go and not being surrounded so closely.
My coffee table is probably my favorite place to reduce the amount of “stuff” when Springtime decorating begins.
What colors are winter to spring transitional?

As I transition into Spring decor, I like to use lighter and calmer colors.
I know the days of brilliant and bright blooms will be here soon as the flowers begin to blossom.
So, as I wait for that, I will usually opt for adding pops of color that are subtle and calm.
It helps gently move from the calm of winter into the fun and life that Spring and Summer bring.

This year, I used apricot tulips and soft blue tones to create this effect.
The other benefit to using blue is that all shades of blue create a tranquil feeling in humans.
How to Transition From Winter to Spring Decor in the Living Room?
Winter to Spring Decor Idea: Lighter Throw Blankets

To add a lighter spring feeling to the living room, I like to swap out chunky blankets for lighter throws.
Not only is this a functional swap, but it also makes the room feel less heavy.
The blanket that I have on the back of the couch for Spring and Summer is a blanket I found at a vintage store.
It brightens up the dark couches.

I would love to swap those out someday, but as it is, couches are so expensive.
So, to make the dark couches not feel as heavy for the Spring, I like to put this big blanket on it.
Winter to Spring Decor Idea: Bring the Outside In
This week, I found a dafadill blooming on our property.
I was so excited.

After the dafadills is the iris, then the lilacs, then the peonies, and roses!
But for now, since only 1 dafadill is blooming, I am bringing the outside in with faux flowers.
For the living room, I stayed with the apicot and white tulips that I did in the Spring Kitchen and Spring dining room.
\You can also check out my tutorial on how I used these faux peonies to make a beautiful spring floral arrangement.
Winter to Spring Decor Idea: DIY Butterfly Art
This was a fun little DIY that I made specifically for this Spring.

I used to have those pressed leaves I made for the Fall in this frame.
But since the leaves didn’t feel like Spring decor to me, I decided to swap them for butterflies.
I plan on doing some butterfly curriculum with the girls this Spring and thought it would be fun to incorporate some of them into the home decor.
Winter to Spring Decor Idea: Less Clutter on Table Tops

For the living room, the table top that gets the biggest spring refresh is the coffee table.
In this post I shared 6 ideas for decorating the coffee table, and I also shared my thought process.
So, if none of those ideas appeal to you, then you’ll have an idea for where to start with coffee table decor to make it your own.
As the girls get older, I keep feeling like there should just be less on the coffee table in general.
This is the place where we play card games and board games almost every day nowadays.

Having less on the table makes it easier for our regular, everyday lives.
But it also reduces the amount of “stuff” in the living room, creating a lighter feeling for Spring home decor.
Winter to Spring Decor Idea: Neutral & Simple Textiles
I added a few different pillow covers to the pillows on the couches to lighten and brighten the space.
But with my spring DIY wall art, I also added a bit of texture.

For both the butterfly wall art and the bird I ironed onto fabric from transfer paper I used fabric as the foundation for the piece.
It isn’t a huge tapestry that jumps out at you.
But I like the softness that they add to the walls.
(I share more about both the butterfly and the bird wall art in my youtube video.)
Winter to Spring Decor Idea: Mantel Decor

Like I mentioned already, sometimes, the best way to transition from winter to spring decor is to do nothing.
That is the case with my faux fireplace mantel.
I decorate it for Christmas with garland and bells and stockings.
But once all of that is packed away and I decorating for spring, I do nothing.
This seems counterintuitive, I know.
But leaving some areas undecorated, creates less clutter from your brain to process.
The mantle is that for me.

At the old house, I would decorate it very sparingly.
Maybe a simple vase of flowers.
But usually, I would err on the side of nothing at all.
Now, with that being said, I will suggest adding something to the floor in front of the mantel.
I like my big galvanized buckets with stems and this black pot with my DIY plant.
Other options are baskets full of pillows and blankets, or a cute little bench/ottoman.
My last idea for the faux fireplace would be to add a candleabra with chunky candles that create the effect and ambiance of a real burning fireplace.
(Remember that barn beam mantel we made at our old house? We are finally working on the range vent cover and plan to add a piece of that barn beam, and I’m so excited!)
Winter to Spring Decor Idea: Lighter Curtains

I had the same beautiful velvet IKEA curtains hanging in our living room since we bought the house a year ago.
I kept them up all Spring and Summer last year.
Honestly, I was surprised at how good they looked and felt even though they were dark.
But for this Spring, I decided to swap them out for something lighter.

The only thing I had on hand was a couple of sets of the sheers I had in the living room at our old house.
I’m not sure if I will stick with the sheers or if I will to want to find something different.
For now I’m going to live with it for a little while and then make my final decision after I see how it feels.
