How can I make my small dining room look nice?

One of the best ways to make a small space look nice is to not clutter it.

A small room can be just as beautiful, if not more in some cases, than a large room.

But it’s easy to think that the best way to make a small space is to add more.

But the opposite is the truth.

A single vase of flowers and a candle stick, or a bowl of fruit on the table instead of a full tablescape is a great approach to making a small dining room look nice.

What are some spring decorations?

Spring decor is as easy as looking outside.

Spring is lighter and brighter and is full of blooms.

Fruit trees blossoms and bulbs like tulips, dafafills, and hyacinth.

My Spring swaps:

  • dark vases for white or clear vases
  • Winter artwork for spring or season-neutral artwork
  • darker linens for lighter linens (pillow covers, curtains, tea towels, bedding, etc.)
  • Flowers (faux or real)
  • Chunky-textured throw blankets for simple, thin throw blankets
  • colored candlesticks for white candlesticks

Affordable Spring Decorating: Incorporate Nature

My favorite way to incorporate nature for spring home decor is to clip some stems off bushes and trees I find on our property.

Right now, there aren’t a lot of things blooming, so my options are very limited.

But I did notice some leaves on the lilac bush and multiflora rose bushes.

I’m so excited to bring them inside.

But until then, I’m using faux options.

Tulips are my main flower choice for early spring decor.

Affordable Spring Decorating: Galvanized/Brass Accents

Copper and black metal accents are my go-to in the cooler months when I want to have a cozier feel in our home.

But antique brass and galvanized metal are lighter and brighter.

Galvanized buckets are some of my favorite ways to style large displays.

They are casual and laid back which is a huge part of why I love to use them for Spring home decor.

I found most of my galvanized buckets in the barn on my husband’s family farm.

But I’ve also seen them a flea markets and garage/barn sales.

Brass candlestick holders are an easy way to incorporate brass.

I’ve found these all over the place: thrift stores, garage sales, Facebook marketplace, and if you’re willing to spend a little more home decor stores.

They are warm but lighter than copper.

Affordable Spring Decorating: Refresh the Hutch

During the winter, we run the pellet stove in the dining room.

Because of the extra heat, I store the honey and tallow in the hutch.

This way, the honey doesn’t get the crystals from the cold, and the tallow is a bit easier to work with.

But now that we’re not running the pellet stove non-stop, it doesn’t matter where I store these two items.

So I moved them back to the pantry for the summer.

I also moved out some of the darker items in the hutch and replaced them with more white.

Especially with this hutch being so dark, I wanted to brighten it up a bit.

I added an empty brass frame to the back of the middle shelf and also added a couple of brass candlestick holders.

Affordable Spring Decorating: Casual Tablecloth

I have to be honest: a huge part of the reason I decided to add the tablecloth was to create a lighter dining room.

Our dining room is in the middle of the house, and it has no windows.

For the cozier months, I’m happy to let it feel a bit “heavier”, but for the Spring I wanted to lift that heaviness a bit.

I bought this tablecloth on Amazon, and I love it.

It’s very casual and creates that cottage feel that I like so much for an affordable spring decorating option.

Affordable Spring Decorating: Simple Tablescape

If you’ve been following along for a while, then you know that elaborate tablescapes are a fun creative outlet for me.

But because our dining room is so small, it would only clutter up the space if I decided to add spring decor with a full tablescape.

So, I keep it simple.

Keeping a simple table setting for spring dining room decorating also leaves room for us to do all the things each day.

We do homeschooling, snacking, folding laundry, not to mention eating our meals at this table.

Our dining room is the most utilized table in our home, so it needs to be generally clutter-free.

Affordable Spring Decorating: Wicker Baskets

Wicker baskets are my favorite affordable spring decorating idea to use each year.

I find all of my baskets at thrift stores and garage sales.

Mainly because I don’t like the idea of spending too much money on a basket.

Most of the baskets I have were less than $5.

I filled this one with some of the white Real Touch tulips I bought on Amazon a few years ago.

They are a bit yellow now because last Spring I pulled them out to decorate with and then left them in the window.

I am still trying to decide if I like them better this way or not.

They feel like antique roses with rough and discolored edges.

Maybe I’ll replace them with new tulips, or maybe I’ll fall in love with them with all their imperfections.

Affordable Spring Decorating: Pops of Color

adding pops of color creates a cozy cottage spring dining room feel

For the dining room, the main source of color came from the flowers.

I added some greenery to the inside of the hutch, and then I also added some of the pastel tulips to the picture rail.

But our favorite pop of color comes from our favorite original painting by Gramma.

When my husband and I first saw it we said it felt like it was a painting of our new farm.

Affordable Spring Decorating: Less is More

In the Fall and Winter, home decorating is always a bit more.

But when Spring comes, I like to simplify.

For many practical reasons: the garden will soon be brimming with produce that overflows into our home, we do less structured school and more fun school (which is generally more messy).

But also for the lighter effect.
