DIY Mudroom Storage Ideas with Country Charm | Beautiful & Simple

Today I’m excited to share the DIY mudroom storage ideas we incorporated into our mudroom closet makeover to make this space more functional and beautiful.

While working on this post I made a pretty big realization about interior design and the choices I make for our home.

I’m one to always talk about function.

I love pretty things, but I want them to be functional first and foremost.

I wouldn’t say that I have changed this mindset completely.

But I do believe that by sharing these DIY mudroom ideas I have refined this belief.

Sometimes failure teaches us things we wouldn’t learn if we only ever succeeded.

This is not the first time I feel like I failed at designing a space and executing my design.

My failed fireplace.

My first failed entryway (One of my first blog posts ever)

And many more.

These are just the two I wrote about haha!

I’ll share more about this realization at the end of this post so those who came for the DIY mudroom storage ideas can get that info first.

What are the storage ideas for a mudroom

A few weeks ago I shared a mudroom inspiration post.

Today is the day I get to show you what our mudroom looks like now.

I’m so excited to have this project done for a few reasons, but the number one reason being that the girls are not leaving their coats in a pile beside the door anymore!

DIY Mudroom Storage Ideas: Before & After

How to create a mudroom space?

DIY mudroom storage ideas: bench

The first thing we did after we emptied this closet and gave it a fresh coat of paint was add a bench.

This bench is special to me.

I told my husband I was happy to go with the simple legs for a bench.

But he knew my heart wanted the curve on the bench legs.

Since buying them would be expensive, he made DIY mudroom bench legs for me.

This bench has made it lovely to put our shoes on and take them off every day.

The other thing I love about this bench is that the girls can climb up on it to hang their coats up.

You wouldn’t believe me if I told you how frequently I was telling the girls to pick up their coats every day haha!

DIY mudroom storage ideas: shelf

This mudroom originally was nothing but shelves.

The entire back wall was full of shelves.

I love shelves and find them to be very functional.

But we needed more than shelves.

So we added a shelf with beautiful DIY corbels my husband designed and created for me.

They give this space a rustic country feel that I love.

DIY mudroom storage ideas: wooden peg rail

If you saw my kitchen storage ideas post from a couple weeks ago, then you know a peg rail is one of my favorites.

They are again, beautiful and very functional.

But for the mudroom we have a double row of pegs.

This is one of the design decisions I made with only function in mind.

I’ll be honest.

I’ve been struggling with this second row for the aesthetics.

It’s great for function, but I’m not sure about it for style.

We’ve decided to live with it for now, and then if I still can’t stand it we will make some adjustments.

DIY mudroom storage ideas: hooks

Remember when I shared that this closet was very deep?

To increase the storage simply, I decided to add two hooks on both side walls.

I started looking for a specific style of hooks and quickly realized they style I wanted was going to be upwards of $15/hook.

Now for 4 hooks it’s not that bad.

But I couldn’t bring myself past it.

$15 for a silly hook!

After I decided to get something cheaper with less style online, I cleaned up the loft space.

The loft is where I store all my decorations.

I stumbled upon a box of old hooks and latches from my husband’s grandma.

In there, I found 3 hooks that I loved.

It’s not symmetrical, but I think I kinda like it the way it is with just the three.

But the price was right haha!

Country style mudroom storage ideas: shoe storage

For now, the shoes are going to be stored on the floor.

Just regular.

For so long I have been searching for some kind of magical shoe solution.

But while I was working on this project I realized something.

The style I like so much, the more laid back, English country, rustic style lends itself to being regular.

That being said I did find this shoe peg rail idea that I might try someday.

But I’ll probably do it in the garage where little boots that just splashed in mud puddles and were filled to the top with creek water can drip dry.

Have I told you guys how wonderful country living has been for us?

Moving to this home 1 year ago was a blessing that just keeps blessing us.

DIY country style mudroom storage ideas: baskets

garden baskets for decorations in mudroom

Baskets are one of my favorite ways to store things in our home.

They beautifully hide the chaos they contain.

In this basket, we have my husband and I’s hats and gloves for when we go to the barn with the animals.

I plan to find another basket that can contain the girls hats and gloves for when they play in the snow.

The hanging basket I use to store what we call “Millie rags”.

These are just the rags that I use to clean Millie’s udder before I milk her each morning.

The other storage solution I was using wasn’t a great solution.

The rags were overflowing out of the produce bag and would fall out of the cabinet if I wasn’t careful.

This rustic country style mudroom idea is one of my favorites.

DIY mudroom storage ideas: personal touches

This is the last, but more important part of our mudroom.

Ever since we finished this space my husband has told me how much he loves this space and it’s because of this point more than any other.

After my mother-in-law passed,6 we were given some of her original artwork.

She loved painting.

While we were working on this space I knew I was going to put one of her pieces in it.

We would see it every time we walked in and out of the house.

Little story

After we finished this project I wanted to delay sharing it with everyone so that I could repaint it (AGAIN), and make a couple of other changes!

I was convinced I had taken too much of a risk with the color and design.

(I know this sounds so ridiculous…it’s my house, shouldn’t the opinions from within my house matter above all the other voices?)

My husband knew I was anxious about it, so one morning while he was sitting on the bench putting his shoes on, and grabbing his coat off the peg rail he announced, “I love this mudroom so much. It makes getting out the door more comfortable as I sit on the bench. Then I get to look at this painting by Gramma and it makes me smile every time. I don’t care what anyone else thinks.”

After he walked out the door I smiled as I held back tears.

You guys, I always talk about efficiency and functionality.

Maybe I overstate the importance of those things.

But rather, maybe I don’t emphasize the importance of homes being a reflection of the people who live in them.

I knew I was going to put one of Gramma’s paintings in this space.

Her memories are so precious to us, and although right now her memory still has tears rolling down our cheeks, someday those same memories are going to bring warm and comforting smiles to our faces.

So incase I get distracted by efficiency and functionality in the future I want to have this written down as a reminder to me, my girls if they ever read this when they get older, and anyone else who may read it and need the same reminder.

Always add personal touches.

Not just in your mudroom.

Oh Aliya it’s SO pretty!! That green color is just lovely. All of the simple but practical touches you put in this space make it truly your own. That bench is AMAZING! The curved legs really make it feel like the cottage style. Super fun transformation!

I really like what you did in your mudroom.
I LOVE the color green/blue you chose.
Can you share what paint color it is please?
I have been searching for just the right green and it helps to see it in “real life” and so beautiful!
    Thank you!!

When a home is only efficient and or functional, without personal touches, it becomes sterile instead of cozy. I have been in homes that are sterile and I feel like I have to sit ramrod straight and mind my peas and cues. I want people to feel peace when they come into my home. I think you do a wonderful job of marrying efficiency and functionality with personal touches. Your home exudes, peace, and a quiet coziness.

I love it, Aliya! Imagine how blessed you are to have a mudroom AND a garage! I live in a 602 square foot home with neither. I love your blog and your home! Ilove your simple country style. Your home looks cozy, comfortable, and beautiful. Keep up the good work!

You are 1000% right. I’m blessed beyond reason. I tell my husband all the time that I feel so blessed and so undeserving. But I guess thats exactly what grace does. It makes those who don’t deserve it able to receive it. So good!! Thank you for helping remind me how blessed I am. I love hearing from you!! Thanks for stopping by and sharing!
