Beautiful DIY Natural Fall Wreath Ideas: Forged and Faux
This year for my Fall decor I decided to go with a more natural look, and I wanted to be budget-friendly so I made a DIY natural Fall wreath.
Before we get into this post I just wanted to say a quick Hi if we’ve never met.
You’re welcome to head over to the About Aliya section so you can get to know me a bit more.
(Over there I share how and why I came to start Open Doors Open Hearts.)

Inspiration for Natural Fall Wreath
The inspiration for this wreath was found mostly in nature.
So if you saw my cottage kitchen Fall decor, then you know I’m going for an earthy color scheme.
Greens.
Browns.
Yellows.
Total aside: I’m finding that I’m missing my plum color scheme from last year, so I might sprinkle that in my dining room a little bit.
I’m sharing a fun Fall tablescape with you next week, so check back to see if I stick with my greens and yellows, or if plum makes an appearance!
If video is more enjoyable for you, then head over and check out the video about how I created this Fall wreath.
The Original Plan
My first idea was to make this DIY cheap fall wreath as thrifty as possible.
Everything forged.
Finding the Leaves
I grabbed some dried-out leaves in the woods.
I just went and found branches that had fallen off the trees and still had leaves attached to them.
Some were brown and some were a deep green.
When I found a branch I gave it a good shake to see if the leaves would stay intact and checked it for spider webs and such.
If it looked good I kept it and continued searching.
Finding Weeds to Hang and Dry
I also went for a walk and started clipping all kinds of fun weeds along the ditches and brought them home to dry.
The problem was I apparently waited too long to cut them.
While they were drying they all went to seed and were no longer the pretty weeds I had cut.
So I had to resort to plan B.
Adjusting my Plan, but Keeping the Same Goal
Has this ever happened to you?
The thing, whatever it was, didn’t go as planned.
Are you the type who usually packs it up and moves on after that?
Or are you the type who pushes on?
You keep the goal, you just adjust how you’re going to reach it.
Well the second type that I mentioned, that’s who I am.
I’d rather change the method by which I reach my goal, than ditch the thing all together.
Sometimes this is a really beautiful characteristic, but other times it’s a flaw in my character.
Balance.
There is a season for everything under the sun.
But for this DIY natural fall wreath, I wasn’t ready to quit.
So I ran to Hobby Lobby to pick up some dried flowers since my forged stems weren’t gonna work.
Bonus, it just so happened to be a 50% off florals week!!
Best Thrifty Tip for Ribbon
I’ve mentioned this tip before, but you guys!
It is so amazing it’s worth mentioning again, just incase someone missed it.
Ribbon can be quite expensive.
But the lady in the fabric section of Hobby Lobby let me in on one of her favorite “ribbons”.
She uses muslin fabric, and has for years!
She simply puts a slit in the fabric at her desire width, and then rips the fabric.
Then she does this on all four sides.
This creates frays all over, but once you pull all the loose frays off you are left with a gorgeous, simple, old-world ribbon.
She takes it a step further and coffee dyes the fabric/ribbon.
I’m absolutely doing that this year for all my Christmas ribbons.
I bought 2 yards of the muslin fabric for $6!!!
I will have ribbon for days, and I’m so excited about it!
Okay lets get into this DIY!
DIY Natural Fall Wreath : Material
- Grapevine wreath
- dried/faux leaves
- dried florals
- floral wire
- ribbon (or muslin fabric)
DIY Natural Fall Wreath : Instructions
Step 1.
The first thing I did before I began putting my wreath together was gathered my supplies for this natural wreath DIY.
Step 2.
The next thing I did was hang the grapevine wreath on a hook.
I like to assemble my wreaths hanging, instead of flat.
I’ve done it both ways and I feel like I get a better grasp on the way it’s actually looking when it’s sitting upright from the start of the DIY process.
Step 3.
Next, I began adding the foundation stems, which for me were the leaves I found outside in the woods.
I started by cutting the big branches into more manageable sizes and then shoving them between the grapevines.
You can absolutely use hot glue here, and it might make it easier.
But I know I’m gonna make a new wreath next year.
So I want “tear down” to be as easy as possible.
Honestly, as long as you get the stems in between the grapevines it ended up pretty secure.
For the shape of my asymmetrical wreath, I found the 7 or 8 o’clock point on the wreath and made that my “center point”.
Then I built up about 2/3 of the way, and I built down from that point about 1/3.
Step 4.
After I had my foundation shape complete I began adding the green leaves.
I did the same thing as I did with the brown leaves, but I did it with fewer branches.
I wanted the green leaves to be more of a pop of color for this earth-toned DIY wreath.
So I just made a balanced look of the green leaves within the brown leaves until I liked the way it looked.
Step 5.
I did step 4 for the dried florals and faux stems that I picked up at Hobby Lobby.
Again, I just added them until they felt balanced.
Step 6.
The yellow flowers that I picked up at Hobby Lobby I bundled together into small groups and then I took some floral wire and put them together.
In all, I ended up with 7 or 8 little bundles of these dried yellow flowers.
After I had them bundled I began adding them to the wreath.
These were a bit trickier to get in between the grapevines because they were so big, so I did use floral wire for a few of them.
Step 7.
After the natural wreath DIY was all assembled I grabbed my muslin fabric ribbon and tied it around the wreath at the center point.
Then the wreath was all done!
I thought I was going to move it to the door, but now that it’s done I think I like it in the entryway.
What do you think?
Should the wreath greet the guest on the front door or is it okay to stay?
