Functional Storage for Copper Pots and Pans
Disclosure: There are some affiliate links below, but these are products I recommend. I won’t put anything on this page that I haven’t verified and/or personally used.
Since we moved in three years ago, this corner of the house has been styled at least 500 different ways. I just couldn’t figure out what to do with it. Initially, I put a huge hutch there. But that didn’t last long because adults hit their hips and kids hit their heads while walking around the table. Recently, I decided to hang two wall racks for our new copper pots and pans in this space. It’s been my favorite layout so far!
The reason I put a massive hutch in this corner, to begin with, was because I wanted to add storage for our kitchen items. Since the days of “the hutch” I’ve learned I really don’t need as much stuff as I thought I did. Also, I’ve learned I can utilize space for function without taking up as much of a footprint. It sounds crazy, I know! But this wall rack did it!
Process of Inspiration
I used to store our pots and pans in this funny cabinet beside the sink. It was narrow but tall. It also had these two metal pipes that ran through it. Due to these constraints I had to hang the pots and pans with “S” hooks on the pipes. It was so unorganized all the time. I was constantly crashing pots and pans into each other while pulling them out. Not to mention the kids figured out how to open the cabinet even with a child lock on it! So they organized my pots and pans too haha.
I knew we needed a better storage solution, and the decision to purchase new copper pots and pans gave me the motivation I needed. At that time this wall was sitting empty. I was waiting for inspiration to hit me and I didn’t want to have the distraction of anything sitting there to slow down the process. I’d been seeing a bunch of those cute wall racks with pegs all over – and it hit me! I could build a rack bigger with stronger hooks and store the new copper pots and pans there! (But don’t be surprised if you find a cute little peg rack in my kitchen someday. I love them!)
We Did It for Nearly Free!
I had a bunch of vintage hooks in a little box sitting on the back storage room shelves, and we have three piles of scrap wood around here. I took my husband with me to find the wood. (The last time I picked out wood for a project by myself, I selected a piece he had predetermined would be used for a different project. I still hear about it, and its been months ago now haha!) All said and done we completed this project for $12, because my husband bought a countersink drill bit so that screws could be hidden. I was very happy with the cost and LOVE the way it turned out!
Focal Point Surprise
I didn’t do this intentionally, but this storage solution has actually become the focal point in our dining area. When people walk into the kitchen/dining space, it is the first thing they notice! Initially, I was thinking about painting the backdoor light blue. But now that I realize the focal point for this room has naturally become the racks, I’m leaving it white. I don’t want a blue door to compete for attention. Maybe someday we can change it out for a wood door! Too bad doors are so expensive huh?
Well, that’s it for now. I hope my challenge has inspired you to find a way to utilize your space for function and then realize the beauty in the design. Thinking outside the traditional box is freeing! Don’t let the idea of fitting into any box limit your creative possibilities!
