Modern Farmhouse Makeover – Teaming Up with Rustik Market
It’s been an exciting few weeks and I’m pumped to finally share them with you! I was able to team up with Rustik Market’s Whitney Smith to decorate a client’s home!! Are you serious?! I am honored and still in utter disbelief that she considered working with me! Teaming up with her was such a joy! I’m excited to show you the transformation now that its finished!
Our client had previously used a primitive style to decorate her home. But recently she decided she wanted a change—and modern farmhouse was the change she chose. A large portion of the items used in this makeover were found at Rustik Market because of the great selection of items they have in this design style. (No wonder I love Whitney’s shop so much!)
Our client had a lot of work done to make this big change. She had the walls, trim, doors, and fireplace painted. She also had new light fixtures, a front door, and hardwood floors installed. Whitney and I began planning the modern farmhouse décor to complete the design after all the foundation work was complete. We worked in three rooms: sitting room, dining room, and living room.
Elements
We wanted all three spaces to feel cohesive, so every room was a natural transition to any of the others. In order to create this feeling, we established a group of the elements we would be working with. By doing this, you can mix and match items that fall within the boundaries of the chosen elements easily.
Style:
Modern farmhouse with bohemian touches
Elements:
Neutral Palette — Foundation
Black and white accents
Woodwork
Vintage books
Jute
Plants
Sitting Room
Their sitting room is used daily for lounging and is the main place for entertaining company. Therefore, we created a layout and decorative touches that would draw people in.
Before
After
Grey and white paint can be intimidating. While some see them as a blank slate, neutral, or light and airy some find them cold and uninviting. If the space is not decorated properly that is exactly what can happen. The way to prevent this is to add warm and natural tones to the space.
We started by adding a cozy and warm jute rug. This is an easy way to increase the amount of warmth in a space, because rugs are so large. Then we utilized pillows to create a cozy feeling. The next elements added to the space were the plants. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can find faux plants that look real. Plants bring life to a room, because, well, they’re living. We also added a side table and a coffee table for space to set down their food or drink while socializing with friends and family. This could easily go from a great community space to a place for some “me time” to sit under the floor lamp and read as the sun rises or sets.
Dining Room
The dinning room is a place where meals are shared and homework is completed. We kept it simple in this room, because of the limited floor space. In order to create the feeling that this room had more space than it actually did we incorporated a visual illusion from the design world.
Before
After
The first thing we did was install a curtain rod so that a 96″ curtain was just touching the floor. We also extended the rod beyond the window frame so there is room to fully open the curtains to the outer edge of the window pane. This lets more natural light in and creates the illusion that the window is larger than it actually is. Next, we needed to add plants, but didn’t want to take up floor space. To solve this dilemma, we put them in hanging wall containers. Our client also selected a new light fixture from Rustik Market. Although, it was a tough choice because Whitney has so many cute light fixtures to choose from. Lastly, we added a custom sign (also from Rustik Market) that spoke to the important things in life, and set this as the focal point of the room.
Living Room
Lastly, we decorated the living room. Generally, the family doesn’t spend much time in this space. Its used as overflow during holidays or large family gatherings. Even so, we challenged ourselves to create a room they loved being in. This room doesn’t receive much natural light to cozy up the space, which means we had to focus on adding cozy elements.
Before
After
Once again, we used a jute rug – but this time for a bit of fun we selected a rug that had pops of blue. We also put a plant inside of a jute basket and set it beside the fireplace. We used blankets and pillows here as well. These blankets are from Rustik Market and add some boho touches to the surrounding modern farmhouse decor. Its nearly impossible to have too many. Although, if your kids are like mine, all the cute pillows and blankets will get turned into a really cute blanket fort.
One of my favorite ways to create a cozy feeling is by using books as decorations, especially if you can get a hold of old books like these. Torn covers and aged pages only increase the cozy feeling. I also use books that I’m actually reading for this purpose. This is what we did throughout the home but specifically here on this side table beside the chair. By placing a side table with books beside a chair you create a cozy corner that will increase the cozy feeling in the space.
I had a great time working on this project. Teaming with Whitney to design a home our client loved was truly rewarding. I love helping people create spaces that they are proud of and eager to invite people into. My favorite part of the entire process was seeing the excitement of our clients when they saw the new spaces together for the first time.
